The Latin phrase translates to "With nothing but the Cross". The motto was originally a war cry or slogan. It's also carved with an English heraldic crest that, according to Fairbairn, belonged to the Barber family, with different spelling variations such as Barbour and Barberton. One of the earliest bearers to the surname was Alexander
